How Do I Choose a Bottle Warmer?

Choosing the right bottle warmer for your baby’s bottle does require looking out for specific features. Before rushing out to buy one, here are some suggestions.

Make Sure the Warmer Fits a Given Brand’s Bottle

If you purchase a bottle warmer made by the same manufacturer as your bottle then you’re on the right track. However, not all baby bottle brands produce a bottle warmer which makes getting the right appliance a bit challenging.

Before buying a warmer, check out the following features:

  • Does it fit all shapes and sizes? This is essential if you’re using a uniquely shaped bottle such as the Comotomo range.
  • Can you use an adaptor? Some bottle warmers have adaptors to fit different types of bottles which can be bought separately.
  • Is it suitable for the bottle’s material? Not all bottle warmers are ideal for silicone or plastic baby bottles so double-check this before buying a warming appliance.

If you have twins or triplets, you also want to ensure the bottle warmer fits more than one bottle. This makes feeding times more relaxing for parents handling a double load.

Compact Design (especially if you travel)

A compact design is essential if you’re taking a bottle-feeding baby with you on a trip. A bulky bottle warmer will become cumbersome when you’re limited by what you can pack in your bags. A compact warmer that fits neatly into your diaper bag or even your handbag is a great solution when looking for a portable device.

Heating Method

Most baby warmers use steam technology to warm up baby bottles. While this is an efficient and quick method for heating milk and food, it can be dangerous. The top of bottles can get very hot making it difficult to lift out without scorching your fingers. Look out for bottle warmers that include a lifting basket or tongs to remove the heated bottle safely.

Ensure the warmer also heats milk evenly. This is vital for avoiding the risk of having hot spots in the bottle. Soft heat technology which uses the method of heating the water directly is good for warming up breast milk when you want to preserve all the nutrients.

How to Warm Up Milk in Popular Baby Bottles

There are other ways of warming up milk in these popular baby bottles. One of the safest ways of warming up refrigerated milk is by holding it under running warm or hot water. Simply turn the bottle so the heat is evenly distributed. This method does take a few minutes.

Another method is to place the bottle in a pot of boiling water on the stove top. However, this can result in hot spots. Warming up in the microwave is not recommended for the same reason. Placing the bottle in a mug of hot water works well and is used by many parents.

Using a Warmer

A bottle warmer really simplifies the process of warming up milk especially when you have a fussing and hungry baby! Most models follow the same method which includes the following:

  • Putting water into the reservoir or main body of the warmer. Make sure you don’t overfill.
  • Switching on the bottle warmer.
  • If this feature exists, adjusting the temperature for the volume of milk being warmed.
  • Waiting for the heating cycle to end before removing the bottle from the warmer.

Always check the temperature of the heated milk on your wrist before feeding your baby. And, refer to the user’s manual to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure you use the bottle warmer correctly.

Wrap Up

I guess you’re convinced now that you’ll probably need a baby bottle warmer, if you’re parents who are bottle-feeding their babies. By checking out the key features of any warmer on my list, you can ensure you’re getting the best fit for your baby’s favorite bottle brand.

Another accessory you might thinking of getting your hands on is using a prep machine. Did you know you might use these the same way as bottle warmers, except they do have one major limitation? Here’s an article I wrote about drawing a comparison between bottle warmers and prep machines.
